Our collection features authentic and genuine Japanese vintage and antique artworks, all crafted no later than the 20th century. Each piece was created entirely by the hands of talented Japanese artists, embodying the spirit of tradition—whether through paintings or calligraphy on rice paper with sumi ink. These authentic works, not prints, reflect the rich history of Japanese art. Additionally, we offer a small selection of vintage prints of works by great Japanese masters, and these are labeled as prints.
Authenticity in Japanese Art: Authentic and Genuine
When describing the works in our Japanese art gallery, we use the terms "authentic" and "genuine" to highlight their uniqueness and value. Here’s what they mean:
Authentic
An authentic work is one crafted entirely by the hands of a Japanese artist, not a print. It’s an original that embodies the spirit of tradition—whether it’s an Edo-period ukiyo-e painting or calligraphy on rice paper with sumi ink. In our gallery, authentic pieces serve as a bridge to the history of Japanese art, where every line speaks to its origins.
Genuine
A genuine work is one created by the Japanese master themselves or with their direct involvement, such as a woodblock print made under the artist’s guidance in the ukiyo-e tradition. Genuine art in our collection consists of paintings and prints where you can feel the artist’s hand and soul, their personal touch in every stroke and line.
