Koi is a homophone for another word that means “affection” or “love” in Japanese; koi are symbols of love and friendship in Japan among many other symbols. Koi are becoming a universal symbol of peace all over the world. By the Heian period (794-1185), koi fish were already popular and kept by nobles in Japan.
"Koi no takinobori (鯉の滝登り, Koi's waterfall climbing)" means, "to succeed vigorously in life." On Children's Day (May 5th), families with boys fly koinobori (carp streamers) outside and wish for boys to grow strong and brave like carp.
The unique fish aren't just popular for their eye-catching features – in Japan, koi fish are an important symbol for courage and resilience, and their historical ties to the country date back centuries.
