A haiku is a short, unrhymed poem, structured in a specific format, consisting of three lines and seventeen syllables. Traditionally, a haiku depicts a tiny moment in time and provides a kireji (“cutting word”) that creates a pause or a sense of closure.

The art of writing haiku is the ability to describe a moment in three lines. In a small poem, every word, every image counts; they acquire special weight and significance. Saying a lot using only a few words is the main principle of haiku.
