Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795), born Maruyama Masataka, was a pivotal Japanese artist of the Edo period, renowned for founding the Maruyama school of painting in Kyoto. His innovative style blended Western naturalism with traditional Eastern decorative elements, emphasizing realistic depictions of nature through direct observation and sketching (shasei). This approach, which incorporated Western techniques like perspective, highlight, and shadow, distinguished him from the more conventional Kanō and Tosa schools. Ōkyo’s work, characterized by the tsukeitate technique (painting without outlines and using ink shading), focused on detailed studies of flora, fauna, and human anatomy, as well as large-scale screen compositions.
